India Gate

India GateIndia Gate is one of the most important historical monument in the city of Delhi. It is a tribute to the 90,000 Indian soldiers who sacrificed their life in World War1, the northwest frontier operations of the same time and the 1919 Afghan fiasco. It was designed by the famous British architect, Edward Lutyens and was originally called the All India War Memorial. All the names of the soldiers are inscribed on the walls of the arc of the gate. The extra memorial beneath the arch honors the lives lost on the Indo-Pakistan War in 1971. A tour to this monument is a lifetime experience that give you the feel of historic India on one hand an on the other hand it lets you understand the importance brave Indian soldiers who died for the country.

The majestic structure is gate is 42 meter tall ad the entire arch stands on a low red stone base and rises in stages to a huge molding. On both the sides, at the top of India Gate is inscribed India Gate. From the base of the arch of India Gate one can have a magnificent view of the Rashterapati Bhavan

Picnic
The green velvety lawns at the India gate are perfect for evening strolls. Locals are seen making picnic on the weekends. While the oldies come here for Yoga and meditation. You may find here local vendors selling ice creams, aerated drinks, and balloons. For the lovers of flowers and beauty, the open lawns are a perfect haven.

Appreciate Patriotism
Feel the pain of 90,000 Indian soldiers who fought for the country and their people. The feeling of patriotism is obvious when you look at the name of the soldiers inscribed on the magnificent Gate and the Amar Jawan Jyoti, the eternal flame.

Swar Utsav
You can be part of Swar Utsav organized by Delhi Tourism in the month of October every year at the Indian Gate lawns. Some of renowned Indian classical musicians and artists participate in this event.

Boating
Quite close to the India Gate are Children Park and Boating Club that organize boating for the tourists. Apart from that you can go shopping in the nearby markets. Janpath and Palika bazaar are most famous among the tourists.

Excursion from India Gate

Near to the India Gate, is a beautiful canopy, with a roof of red sandstone, under which the marble statue of George V once stood. It was also designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and constructed in 1936. For the purpose of information the statue has been removed from beneath the canopy to the Coronation Memorial Park in North Delhi. The emptiness of the canopy reminds of the British retreat in India.
