Maharashtra - The Land of Marathas

Maharashtra

Maharashtra Maharashtra, one of the most industrialized states of India occupies the western and central parts of the country. It extends over the Sahayadri mountains; a vast stretch of 720 kilometers of the Arabian Sea coast providing it a beautiful backdrop. The major tourist places in Maharashtra India are Mumbai, Pune, Nashik, Mahabaleshwar etc. Maharashtra was formed on May 1, 1960 on unilingual principle by carving it out of the erstwhile Mumbai state, which included the predominantly Marathi-speaking areas. Maharashtra India is surrounded by the Arabian sea in the west, Gujarat on the north, Madhya Pradesh in the east and Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh on the south.

Pune - The Abode of Osho
Pune Location: The second biggest city of Maharashtra, the home to the Maratha leader, Shivaji.

Tourist Destinations: The principle landmark of Pune is the Osho Ashram, the residence of Bhagwan Rajneesh (also known as Osho). The Shanwarawada Palace with its pleasant gardens and huge outer walls is another must visit in Pune. The Raja Kelkar Museum with unusual, the antique and the artistic collections draws several tourists. The other must visit museum is the Tribal Museum. The Gandhi National Memorial, in the Aga Khan palace is also an important landmark of Pune. The 8th century rock-cut temple, the Ptaleshwar Temple is most popular temple dedicated to goddess Parvati. Also, there is a famous Muslim shrine, the Qamarali Darvesh having a stone that is believed to levitate. Twenty-five kilometers south-west of Pune, perched on a hill-top, is one of Maharashtra's forests, Sinhagad, or the Lion Fort. For nature lovers Pune offers the Bund gardens on the banks of the river Mula-Mutha.

Nashik - The Temple City
Nashik Location: It is one of the most important cities of Northern Maharashtra. Nashik, in Maharashtra, is situated at a distance of 200 km from Mumbai (Bombay) as well as Pune.

Tourist Destinations: The river Godavari purifies the city. Temples and ghats on the banks of Godavari have made Nashik one of the holiest places for Hindus all over the World. Nashik mainly known as pilgrim centre, is truly a temple city. The areas like Panchavati , and other nearby places like Trimbakeshwar, Vani, Shirdi, Pandavlena etc are also the major tourists attractions.

How To Reach Maharashtra

Maharashtra has five domestic airports and one international airport at Mumbai. Most of these airports have regular connections through the Indian Airlines and other domestic airlines. Mumbai is the hub of the railway network in Maharashtra having three major railway stations and the headquarters of two Railway Zones in India. Many important tourist spots in the state are directly connected to Mumbai by regular trains. Maharashtra has the best road connectivity in India and most of the important places are conveniently connected to each other.
