Since bygone times India has been known and renowned for Meditation and
Yoga methodology. As a result of the popularity of Meditation and Yoga in
India; many Meditation and Yoga Centres propagated in India. They have
marked their place in Indian as well as global arena. Some of the famous
Meditation and Yoga Destinations in India are Haridwar, Rishikesh, Varanasi
and Nashik. Meditation and Yoga Places in India have added on with time but
the traditional and original element remains confined to these places only.
Haridwar - The Gateway to the Gods
Location: Haridwar is located in Uttaranchal at a height of almost
300 meters above sea level. Haridwar or 'the Gateway to the Gods' is one of
the seven holiest places according to Hindu mythology. Haridwar stands as
the gateway to the other three important pilgrimages of Uttrakhand namely,
Rishikesh, Badrinath and Kedarnath.
Tourist Destinations: Referred to as Mayapuri, Gangadwar, and
Mokshadwar in the ancient scriptures and epics, Haridwar has always remained
a major pilgrimage for the Hindus. The golden reflection of floral diyas in
the river Ganges is the most enchanting sight in the twilight during the
Ganga Aarti ceremony at the Har-Ki-Pauri ghat. The temple of Chandi Devi
atop the Neel Parvat is a 3-km trek from Chandi Ghat. The Chandi Devi Temple
is also accessible by a ropeway through the Gauri Shankar Temple. The temple
atop the Bilwa Parvat is dedicated to Goddess Mansa Devi. A true replica of
the original Vaishno Devi temple in Jammu & Kashmir is newly constructed
here. The Gurukul Kangadi University is a center of learning where education
is imparted in the traditional Indian way even now. The Veda Mandir within
the university houses many archaeological exhibits situated on the
Haridwar-Jwalapur bypass road. Other important tourist places are the Bharat
Mata Temple, Maya Devi Temple, Bhimgoda, and Shanti Kunj.
Rishikesh - Swing On Lakshaman Jhula
Location: Rishikesh is located in the northern Uttaranchal,
spreading on the Ganges, at its confluence with the Chandrabhaga stream.
Surrounded by hills on three sides, it has an altitude of 356 m above sea
level.
Tourist Destinations: Rishikesh abounds in temples. Most of the
pilgrims who pass through Rishikesh on their way to the Himalayan shrines of
the Char Dham pause for a holy dip and puja at Triveni Ghat. The most
spectacular view is during aarti (evening worship) when diyas or oil lamps
float on the water. Nearby is the Bharat Mandir, one of the oldest dedicated
to Lord Vishnu. The Chandreshwar temple stands at the confluence of the
Chandrabhaga and the Ganges. Also there is Hanuman Mandir is flocked by a
large number of devotees mainly on Tuesday.
The dense-knit complex of cafés, shops and ashrams collectively
known as Swarg Ashram is the most attractive part of Rishikesh, backing on
to forested hills where caves are still inhabited by sadhus or hermits. The
Lakshman Jhula , a 450-feet-long suspension bridge and was built in
1939.There you can see the Lakshman Temple on the west bank.
Rishikesh is called the yoga capital of the world and there are many
ashrams in Rishikesh offering courses on meditation, yoga and Hindu
philosophy. The hatha yoga and pranayama meditation classes at Sri Ved
Niketan Ashram are well known. The International Yoga Festival is organized
every year from February 2 to 7 by UP Tourism.
How to Reach Haridwar and Rishikesh
The nearest airport is the Jolly Grant in Dehradun, but it is preferable to
use the highways or railways to Delhi and then take flights to the
destination of your choice. Haridwar is well connected by trains to almost
all the major cities in India. The National Highway No.45 crosses the city,
so it is connected to other cities of the state as well as other parts of
India. There are regular buses available from Delhi to Haridwar. The state
transport corporation has ordinary as well as deluxe and semi-deluxe buses
on this route for long distance travel. One can also use private taxis and
buses. To reach Haridwar, the nearest airport is Dehradun. A Vayudoot
service operates from Delhi to Dehradun. A few private airlines also operate
flights from Delhi to Dehradun. Rishikesh is connected by rail via Haridwar,
Howrah, Mumbai, Delhi, Lucknow, Varanasi, Dehradun and other cities. There
is a daily Shatabdi Express and a Mussourie Express from Old Delhi Railway
Station to Haridwar.
