History of Panaji

Panaji, the capital of Goa, is settled on the left bank of the River Mandovi. Panaji or Panjim was the name given by the Portuguese, which literally means 'The Land That Never Gets Flooded'. Travel to the city of Panaji, which was originally a small village and comprised of the lush growth of coconut groves, blue laguna, sandy beaches, small streams and beautiful backwaters. The status of Panaji was elevated to that of a city and renamed 'Nova Goa' after the collapse of Old Goa in the 19th century AD.
