This semi desert region of Rajasthan is one of the most colorful and
artistic regions of India. Shekhawati, which means '
the garden of the
Shekha', owes its name to its former ruler Rao Shekha (1433 AD-1488 AD).
The Shekhawati belt, which covers a number of towns like
Lakshmangarh,
Jhunjhunu, Fatehpur and
Nawalgarh, is famous for its beautiful
Havelis and stunning frescoes. Besides, the region also has a number of
forts, small castles, mosques and intricately designed Baoris (step wells),
which draws many tourists.
Exploring the beautiful Havelis that dot this otherwise flat and barren
land can be an interesting experience. Various forms of art adorn the walls
and ceilings of these magnificent havelis, which can be dated anywhere
between the 18th century and the 20th century. The frescoes that depict
various historical and mythological themes deserve a special mention. Anyone
visiting Rajasthan should make it a point to travel to Shekhawati, which can
be an amazing experience. The best time to travel to Shekhawati is during
the winters (October to March).
