History of Velha Goa

Old Goa, also known as Velha Goa, is the old capital of Goa. Velha Goa was originally founded by Adil Shah in the early 16th century AD. Alfonso de Albuquerque made Velha Goa his capital in 1510 AD. About the Velha Goa

The church contains the relics of St. Francis Xavier, the Patron Saint of Goa and the Apostle of the Indies. Built in Baroque style of architecture, this church is also famous for being the first church of India to be elevated to the status of a minor basilica in the year 1946. The Convent of Santa Monica is one of the largest nunneries of Goa.
