West Bengal TourWest Bengal, located in the eastern part of the Indian peninsula is a complete representation of the Indian subcontinent. Darjeeling, its northern end, lies cuddled in the arms of the mighty Himalayas and the Dooars in the foothills are rich in forest. most popular tourist spot in Kolkata includes Victoria Memorial, a huge
white-marble structure and the most enduring of remains of the British Raj
in India. Indian Museum, built in 1874 is the oldest archaeological museum
in India. Eden Garden is a small and pleasantly laid-out garden. The place
also houses the renowned cricket ground by the same name. Birla Planetarium
is one of the largest of its kind in the world. The tourist places in
Kolkata are Fort William, Kali Mandir and Howrah Bridge. Darjeeling
Darjeeling is most famous for Ghoom, 6 kms away from the main town. The
hillock is dominated by the famous Yiga Choeling Monastery, which has 15
images of the Maitreya Buddha. A steep ride, five kilometers from Ghoom, or
an invigorating walk up a steep incline, leads sun worshippers to Tiger
Hill. The Museum of Natural History is an exclusive collection of Himalayan
animals, reptiles, birds and insects. The Llyod Botanic Garden has a
marvelous collection of alpine flora and orchids. Padmaja Naidu Himalayan
Zoological Park is the only center in India for the breeding of the rare
snow leopard. The Darjeeling-Rangit Valley ropeway, one of the longest in
Asia is a thrilling ride with splendid views. The Tibet refugee center is an
excellent Tibetan art and culture outlet for purchasing Tibetan souvenirs. Sunderbans
A UNESCO world heritage site, Sunderbans is home to the largest number of
wild tigers in the world. Sunderbans is the largest estuarine delta in the
world and the biggest colony of the Royal Bengal Tigers. The Bhagabatpur
Crocodile Project is a crocodile-breeding farm. Sajnekhali has a bird
sanctuary with a Mangrove Interpretation Centre too. There are watchtowers
at Sajnekhali, Sudhanyakhali, Netidhopan, Haldi and a number of other
places. Other tourist places in the area include Netidhopan, which has the
ruins of a 400-year-old temple; and Holiday Island, which is a retreat of
the barking deer and Kanak, which is the nesting place of Olive Ridley
Turtles. How To Reach West BengalWest Bengal is has a smooth connection with the national and international air network. The international (Netaji Subhash International Airport) and domestic airports of Kolkata, Dumdum, is located 15 km from the city center. The Bagdogra airport at Siliguri connects the state with places in and around the state. Three more airports, namely, Balurghat, Coochbehar and Malda also give an option of domestic flights. West Bengal owes a major railway network. Kharagpur railway station has the longest railway platform in India. The Howrah railway station is one of the most accessed railway heads in India. New Jalpaiguri railhead connects Darjeeling with other places of the country by toy train. The national as well as state highways connect West Bengal with major cities in and around the state. The state transport corporation also runs regular buses connecting these places. There are also private tour operators that provide luxury coaches to access the nearby places.
