The Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, also known as the Keoladeo Ghana National
Park is one of the best bird sanctuaries in the world. Created in 1890 by
the Maharaja of Bharatpur as a bird hunting reserve, this sanctuary is home
to more than 300 species of birds. Moreover, the park also attracts
thousands of migratory birds from Siberia, Europe, China, Afghanistan,
Central Asia and Tibet every year. If you travel to Bharatpur during October
to February, you will be able to catch sight of some famous bird species
like the Siberian crane, the Siberian Greyleg Goose and the Chinese
Bareheaded Goose. Besides, the park is also home to birds like the Pelican,
Painted Stork, Pipit, Warbler, Wagtail, White Ibis and the Marsh Harrier.
This world famous bird sanctuary was made a National Park in 1982 and
declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1985. Besides the birds the
Bharatpur sanctuary is also inhabited by some of the animal species like the
Hyena, Sambhar, Chinkara, Blackbuck, Wild boar, Wildcat and the Nilgai. The
sanctuary has a number of well-defined trekking routes for those who would
like to explore the park on foot. You could also explore the park on cycles,
man pulled rickshaws or take boating trips, which would help you in
observing the birds from very close quarters. The best time to travel to
Bharatpur is from August to February.

Bharatpur Government Museum
The Bharatpur Government Museum is one of the major tourist attractions
located inside the park. It preserves various articles of the royal past,
providing an opportunity to know about the past royal splendor of Bharatpur.
Lohagarh Fort
This iron structure was built in the first half of the 18th century AD.
Maharaja Suraj Mal built this fort, which houses three palaces, namely,
Kishori Mahal, Mahal Khas and Kothi Khas. This fort has the distinction of
remaining unconquered till date.
Bharatpur Palace
This artistic marvel is a unique blend of the Mughal and Rajput styles of
architecture. This beautiful palace has some exquisitely decorated
apartments that are a treat to the eyes. The Bharatpur Palace also houses
the Government museum now.

Bird watchers should always carry binoculars on their bird watching trips.
All visitors to the Keoladeo Ghana Park, Bharatpur need to get an entry
permit available at the entrance. International tourists need to pay an
entry fee of Rs 200 whereas the domestic tourists have to pay Rs 25 as their
entry fee. Extra charges have to be paid for cameras and other electronic
equipments.
How to reach Bharatpur
Air: The nearest
airport is Agra, which is about 55 km.
Rail: Regular rail services connect Bharatpur with several cities on
Delhi-Mumbai trunk route. Rail services also connect Bharatpur with Jaipur
and Agra.
Road: A good network of bus services links Bharatpur with
several cities within and outside Rajasthan.
