Ladakh, the land of jagged peaks and barren landscape is at once alluring
and awe-inspiring. Hidden behind this harsh and forbidding façade is
an ancient civilization and a captivating people. With its unaltered

belong to this great land of towering mountains and Buddhist simplicity.The largest of the 10 provinces of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh is bordered by the Karakoram chain of mountains in the north and the Himalayas in the south. With the great Indus flowing right through Ladakh, the province is divided into Leh, the capital Nubra, Zanskar, lower Ladakh and Rupshu. The many distinctive features of Ladakh are its uplands, craggy, barren cliffs and plateaus. Governed by a climate that provides about 50 mm of rainfall each year, Ladakh is cold and dry. A visitor, therefore, will be faced with a long and bitter winter of frozen landscape but yet very beautiful, and a short, hot summer when the precious glaciers melt. Tourist Attractions in LadakhBesides the astoundingly beautiful landscapes and the alluring wide open cold deserts, the other most fascinating feature of Ladakh is the centuries old Ladakhi culture that has still managed to retain to retain its simplicity.Monasteries Buddhism is the dominant religion in Ladakh and the monasteries play an important social role. For instance, the lamas are involved in organizing the education, medical facilities and other such social activities. Each monastery is distinct from the others and attractive in its unique way, and it may belong to the Mahayana sect or the Hinayana sect of Buddhism. Most of these monasteries or gompas are precariously perched on lone rocks or craggy mountain faces. The head lama is called the kushak meaning reincarnation. Valuable works of art like tangkhas, masks, musical instruments of a typical kind and various precious figurines can be found in the gompas. The Hemis monastery is the largest monastery in Ladakh. At any given time, there are at least a 150 lamas living in it. Hemis is especially renowned for a huge painting of the Buddha, which is displayed to the poublic once in 11 years. The Thikse monastery, near Leh, is considered to be an architectural wonder. The Shey monastery has a huge gold-plated copper statue of the Buddha. Alchi, Likir and Lamayuru are amongst the oldest gompas of Ladakh. Alchi was built 1,000 years back and Likir dates as far back as the 11th century. Flora and Fauna Ladakh has a unique flora and fauna. The dzo is an animal that is peculioar to Ladakh, and is a hybrid between the yak and cow and is used to plough fields here The yak is another animal that is synonymous with Ladakh. The people in some form or the other use its meat, horns, hooves, hide, hair and even tail. Tourists can take Yak back rides which can be a lot of fun! The famous pashmina and other varieties of wool are produced here and wool production is a major profession. Exotic flowers such as the iris and larkspurs bloom in the warmer months in Ladakh and have a fragile beauty. Excursions in LadakhLadakh offers a number of excursion sites nearby.Skara Skara, a village near Leh is where local archery contests that test an archers skill and accuracy are held with regularity. But the best par of being a spectator to these contests is that you are treated to delectable apricots, apples and dry fruit, as well as the potent chan, a a heady brew made of barley and gur tea, which is a regional favorite and must not be missed. Nubra Valley The ancient silk merchants passed through the sleepy pastoral countryside of the Nubra valley thousands of years ago. Nubra is located near the strategic Siachen glacier, on the Indo-Pak border. The Khardungla Pass, the highest motor able pass in the world is located nearby. Nubra has been thrown open to tourism only recently, and offers some spectacular ly beautiful landscapes. One of the peculiarities of Nubra that make it a special place is the co-existence of water, mountain and desert! It also the home of the double humped Bactrian camel, which is rarely seen elsewhere in Ladakh. Other places that have been recently opened up to tourists are the beautiful Pangong Tso Lake on the Indo-China border and Baima, whose villagers descent can be traced to the early Aryan settlers. How to Reach LadakhLadakh, the capital of Leh is connected with regular flights from Delhi, Chandigarh and Srinagar. The Leh airport offers one of the most spectacular landings in the entire world.By road, the 434 kilometer long journey from Srinagar to Leh takes two days with an overnight halt at Kargil. The road is open from June to October. There is also a road from Manali to Leh via Keylong, which remains open from June to October.
