Also known as Vizag, Visakhapatnam is a vibrant coastal city blessed with diverse tourist attractions. It is one of the major port cities of Andhra Pradesh. Steeped in natural beauty, the city boasts majestic hills, scenic beaches along the Bay of Bengal coastline, and picturesque valleys. Visakhapatnam is home to prominent shipbuilding and port facilities and is fondly referred to as the ‘Jewel of the East Coast’.

Visakhapatnam is an important industrial and commercial hub. Its key industries include steel production, shipbuilding, petroleum refining, fertilizers, pharmaceuticals, and petrochemicals, contributing significantly to the region’s economy.


History

According to legend, the city derives its name from the deity Vaishaka. Visakhapatnam finds mention in ancient Hindu epics such as the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. During the 5th century BC, the region was part of the Kalinga territory and later became an important centre of Buddhism. The area is also believed to have been under the influence of Emperor Ashoka.


Visakhapatnam serves as the headquarters of the Eastern Naval Command of the Indian Navy. The city is surrounded by scenic hill ranges, including Sri Venkateswara Konda, Ross Hill, and Dargakonda, which add to its natural charm.

Indira Gandhi Zoological Park

Surrounded by forested hills, this zoological park is located amidst the scenic Eastern Ghats. The Bay of Bengal lies to its east. The park is home to a wide variety of bird and animal species.

Other notable attractions include Simhachalam Temple, Ross Hill Church, VUDA Park, Baba Ishaq Madina Dargah, Sri Venkateswara Temple, and Dolphin’s Nose, a prominent rocky headland overlooking the port.

Holding great geological, historical, and religious significance, Borra Caves are located approximately 90 km from the city. Discovered in 1807, these limestone caves are famed for their spectacular stalactite and stalagmite formations.

By Road: National Highway 16 (Kolkata–Chennai corridor) passes through Visakhapatnam. APSRTC and private buses connect the city with major towns and neighbouring states.
