Churches are one of the known aspects of Goa Tourism visited by scores of tourists around the year. Most of the churches were built in Old Goa, and today some of these churches are a world heritage site. These churches are famous for their interesting blend of Portuguese and Indian style of design, decorations and constructions.

Se Cathedral Church

This is a largest Portuguese Gothic style church located in Old Goa about 9 kilometers from Panaji. It is the largest church in Asia renowned across the globe for its giant bells and exquisite architecture. The Se Cathedral of Goa is dedicated to St. Catherine of Alexandria. This magnificent edifice was built in the 16th century under the Portuguese rule in India. The exterior of the building is in Tuscan style while the interior is in Corinthian. The 98 feet high fa?ade of this church is flanked by two Manueline style square towers. Walls of the church are decorated with lovely paintings, which enthrall tourists during their visit to this place.


The Basilica of Bom Jesus

It is another popular church in Goa, which preserved the body of St.Francis Xavier. This World Heritage Site is located in old Goa, renowned for its extravagant interiors and exteriors decorations. St. Francis Xavier was a member of the Society of Jesus, who preached the enlightening teachings of Christianity. The floor of the church is made of pure white marble decorated with semi-precious stones. The altar of the church is elaborately carved and covered with gold. Tourists in a large number come here to see the mortal remains of the saint that are kept in a tight coffin made of glass and placed inside a silver casket


Church of Our Lady of the Rosary

This is among the oldest surviving churches of Goa located atop the Monte Santo (Holy Hill). This church was built in the 16th century on the spot where Alphonso de Albuquerque conquered Goa in 1510 from Indian ruler. It revered by the public because it was here the St. Francis Xavier used to preach catechism every evening. The architectural beauty, magnificent decorations and historical importance make this church an UNESCO world heritage site.


The Church of St. Francis of Assisi

This another stunning and charming Church in Goa situated at a distance of 10 km from the capital, Panaji. This church is at the same complex in which Se Cathedral is located. The church is famous for its aesthetic design of Bible depiction and floral designs on the walls. The church was built during 1517-1521 AD which has now been turned into a museum.


Some of the other popular churches of Goa are Chapel of St. Catherine, Church of Reis Magos, Church of Holy Spirit and Church of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception.
