Introduction to the Hill Resorts of India
A subcontinent in itself, India is a land of diversity. From perennial shorelines to snow capped mountains, languidly spread desert to evergreen forests, India's topography is a wondrous gift of nature. And a natural gift that is unique to India is its string of hill stations, peppered all over the country. In other parts of the world, we consider the visiting places in the hills as Hill Resorts.
The term Hill Stations of India was first coined during the Colonial rule when the Europeans started stationing in the hills of Himalayas to get respite from the heat and dust of plains of the north. They discovered and developed many places in the Himalayas in the north and Nilgiri's in the South India. These small resorts in some way were the replicas of their ancestral homes back home. Until, India got independence, many parts of these hill stations were off limit for native Indians, as the Burra Sahibs (the native term used for white people) never liked any native to walk along with the sophisticated Europeans.
After the independence, most of the colonists left their property on the hill stations, mostly cottages and villas built in the colonial styles, or sold them to native Indians. Now these hill stations are scene of heavy tourist rush during the summer months. During the winters, adventure sports like skiing keeps the people attracted to these sylvan hill stations in India. Some of the major hill stations in India are Shimla, Manali, Mussoorie, Ooty, Munnar, Dharamsala, Dalhousie, Darjeeling, Shillong, etc.
