History
During the 7th century, Bilaspur was the capital of a state which was founded during that century. The Chandela Rajputs used to rule over it. And this town was declared to be a princely state during the British rule in India. According to the legend, the famous saint named as Rishi Vyas had also lived here in the past. Nalwari Cattle Fair
Celebrated for around five days, the Nalwari Cattle Fair of Bilaspur is a wonderful and colorful event. It is celebrated in March/ April every year and many a visitors come here to experience its charm. Various interesting cultural activities make this fair interesting and wrestling is one of them. The beautifully decorated cattle are one of the main highlights of the fair. Traders come from far and wide to strike lucrative cattle deals during the fair.
Bahadurpur Fort
Now in ruins, the Bahadurpur Fort is roosted on a hill at an elevation of 1980 m offering picturesque views of the surroundings. The fort is framed by the beautiful deodar trees. It was built in 1830 and is easily accessible from Bilaspur as it is only 40 km away from the town.
Shri Naina Devi Temple
Dedicated to Goddess Naina Devi, the temple is nestled on a hill overlooking a colorful bazaar. One can reach this beautiful temple either by climbing the stairs or through a ride in a cable car. It is among the important Shakti Peeths in the country. The temple was built by Raja Bir Chand in the 8th century.
Sariun Fort
Built by the king of the erstwhile Suket state, Sarium Fort was later conquered by the Bilaspur ruler. It is a wonderful fort nestled at an elevation of 1500 m.
Vyas Cave
Holding great religious significance this cave dates back to the ancient times. It is believed that the great Indian saint Vyas Rishi meditated in this cave which makes this cave a famous pilgrimage site of Bilaspur. It is located on the left bank of river Satluj.
Bhakra Dam
It is a major draw of Bilaspur as it is the highest straight gravity dam in the world. It covers an area of 168 sq km and is 90 km in length. It offers picturesque views of the surrounding jungles.
Raut Nach Festival
Raut Nach Festival beautifully reflects the passion of Himachalis towards dance. Dressed in colorful and traditional attire the performers of Raut Nacha reflect the religious fervor of the cowherds of the region. It is held every year in the month of December.
