Great Himalayan National Park
Sprawling over an area of 765 sq km, this sanctuary is known for its wildlife species including the migratory birds. Located near Kullu, this Park is roosted at an altitude of 1,300 m to 6,100 m. Plants with medicinal properties are also found here. A wide variety of mammals are sighted here. Around 375 species of animals live in this park. The Blue sheep, the endangered Musk deer and snow leopard are the notable attractions. Around 68 species of migratory birds are found in this park. The best time to visit is from April to June and September to November.
Pin Valley National Park
Located in the Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh, this park is a great place to visit. Covering an area of 67,500 hectares, it fosters wildlife species like Red Indian Fox, Snow Leopard, Tibetan Gazelle, Himalayan Mouse Hare, Himalayan Marmot, Blue sheep, Indian Hodgsoris Porcupine, Ibex, Bharal and Wolf. Government?s permission is required for entering this park.
Kalatop Khajjiar wildlife sanctuary
Offering great trekking opportunity, this sanctuary is located in Chamba district. Covering an area of 1962 hectares, this sanctuary is replete with bears, deer and ibex. A variety of other wildlife species are also found here. Trekking can be enjoyed here but beware you might bump into a black bear. So it is always advisable to remain with the guide as he knows the forested areas very well.
Chail Sanctuary
This sanctuary, located at a distance of 4 km from Chail town, not only offers wildlife but also the enchanting scenic beauty. From the rare orchids to amazing floral species, wildlife species and endangered species, it offers a lot. It covers an area of 110 sq km. Some of the wildlife species found in Chail sanctuary are Red Deer, Silver-White Oak, Barking Deer, Indian Hare, Common Langur, Leopard, Rhesus Macaque, Himalayan Yellow Throated Marten, Indian Porcupine, Common Giant and Kashmiri Flying Squirrel and Chir Pheasants.
Renuka Sanctuary
Known for its variety of butterflies and wildlife species, this sanctuary is located in Sirmour district of Himachal Pradesh. It also houses a small aviary where you will see a wide variety of water birds. Some of the other attractive wildlife species found here are spotted deer, lion-tailed macaques, nilgai, large grey Indian antelope, Himalayan black beer, Asiatic lions etc.
Manali Sanctuary
Located 2 km from Manali town, this sanctuary will surely enchant you with its flora and fauna. Musk deer, brown bear, snow leopard, leopard, monal, and ibex are some of the main attractions here. Covering an area of 3,180 hectares of land, this sanctuary offers great chances of sighting the snow leopard.
Daranghati Sanctuary
Located near Rampur Bushahr in Shimla district, this sanctuary is a perfect place for wildlife lovers and adventure buffs. It not only offers a wide variety of wildlife species but also the opportunities for trekking. Some of the main highlights of the sanctuary are Himalayan Black Bear, Brown Bear, Himalayan Palm Civet, Barking Deer, Musk Deer, Flying Fox, Goral, Indian Hare, Stripped Hyena, Himalayan Ibex, Leopard, Himalayan yellow throated Marten, Serow, Blue Sheep, Common giant flying Squirrel and Himalayan Weasel.
