Sunderbans is located in southern tip of West Bengal where the land meets the sea.? Etymologically this word derives from Bengali language which means ‘beautiful jungle’ or ‘beautiful forest’. Some says that this place got its name from one of the mangrove plants known as Sundari (Heritiera Minor). The Sundarbans is a part of the world's largest delta formed by the rivers Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna. Because of the biggest mangrove forest in the world and diverse biodiversity this place has been declared an UNESCO World Heritage Site. This place covers an area of 4262 square km in India and 2585 square kilometers in Bangladesh.
The history of this place is dated back to 200–300 AD.? A ruin of a city built by Chand Sadagar has been found in the Baghmara Forest Block. During the Mughal period, local kings leased the forests of the Sundarbans to residents.

Sundarbans National Park
This National Park is a Tiger Reserve, UNESCO World Heritage Site and a Biosphere Reserve located in the Sundarbans delta in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is the region which is densely populated with mangrove forests and one of the largest reserves for the Bengal tiger. It is also the habitat of variety of bird, mammals, reptiles and invertebrate species, including the saltwater crocodile. It is the largest estuarine mangrove forest in the world where one can find twenty-six of the fifty mangrove types.
This national park is also known for the exotic collections of flora such as saltwater mixed forest, mangrove scrub, brackish water mixed forest, littoral forest, wet forest and wet alluvial grass forests. According to 2004 census, the tiger population in Indian Sundarban is around 274. With this there are 58 species of mammals, 55 species of reptiles and around 248 bird species can be sighted here. The best part of this national park is the boat safari where tourists float down through the various river sublets and closely encounter several wild species.

Best time to visit Sundarbans
The best season to visit the Sunderban is between December and February. Because of its proximity to the Bay of Bengal this place has high humidity and rainfall is quite heavy during monsoon, which last from mid-June to mid-September.
