Rafting in India is undoubtedly an experience that will remain etched in your memory forever. White water rafting involves cruising down gushing rivers and navigating roaring rapids, making it one of the most exhilarating ways to conquer your fear of water.

India boasts magnificent rivers and picturesque locations that are perfect for white water rafting. Many of the best rafting destinations are located in the Himalayas, with the River Ganges topping the list. Other rivers that offer excellent opportunities for rafting enthusiasts include the Indus, Zanskar, Teesta, Alaknanda, Tons, Mandakini, Kalisor, Bhilangana, and Bhagirathi. This sport is generally confined to northern rivers that flow southward from the Himalayas, winding through semi-evergreen forested mountains and steep gorges. Rishikesh, one of the most popular spiritual tour destinations in India, also attracts visitors with its exciting rafting adventures. So, get ready for a wild water experience!

Things to Know About White Water Rafting

Equipments for Rafting

If you do not have your own equipment, there is no need to worry. Several tour agencies and government tourism offices arrange white water rafting equipment for tourists. The equipment generally includes life jackets, helmets, the assistance of an expert guide, and often food and accommodation.

Things to Remember

Rafting is a serious adventure sport, so it is important to be well prepared in advance. Rafters are advised to follow the trainer’s instructions carefully at all times. Mutual cooperation is essential for such life-threatening adventure activities. Persons suffering from major heart conditions or epilepsy, as well as expectant mothers, are not permitted.

Things to Carry

If you are going on a rafting trip, make sure you wear light (nylon) clothing along with comfortable shoes. You should carry a good sunscreen, dark glasses, shorts, T-shirts or other light, quick-dry clothing, and suitable footwear such as sneakers. Do not forget to pack your camera, a windproof jacket, and a flashlight.

Permits

White water rafting in certain parts of the country requires special permits from the government, especially in areas close to international borders such as Nubra, Sikkim, Lahaul, and Spiti. Foreign nationals may require permits for these regions.

Permits can usually be obtained fairly easily from District Commissioners, District Magistrates, or other senior officials. You may also enquire at the Ministry of Home Affairs in New Delhi to determine whether a permit is required and where it can be obtained.
