Amarnath Yatra

Introduction

Amarnath Yatra holds a great value amongst the Hindu devotees. The final destination of this Yatra is Amarnath cave. Located at a distance of around 145 km from Srinagar, Amarnath is recognized for ice linga formation. It starts in the month of July and within a month, the linga takes full shape with in a month. Fall of ice droplets from the roof is the source that creates a natural 'linga' of ice.

History of the Shrine

Related to Lord Shiva, the shrine has a unique history. According to the legends, Lord Shiva chose Amarnath caves to share the story of living forever with Goddess Parvati. The reason behind choosing the location was the isolation of these caves. While narrating the story, Lord Shiva did not notice the eggs of pigeons. As they heard the story, the pigeons became immortal and can be found in the caves till date.

Religious Significance

The ice linga of Lord Shiva holds a great significance in the Hindu religion. According to the believes, the linga expands during the waxing moon and shrinks as it wanes. The belief that Lord Shiva visit the cave on the first day of the Shravan month draws the devotees here from all over the world.

How to Get to Amarnath

The yatra is not as easy as any other trek. It is crucial up to high extent that you need to undergo a complete medical check-up before starting this Yatra. Tourists can book a package with tour operators for helicopter service, walk or even a ride on a horseback to reach Amarnath caves. It is recommended to plan the tour before time as the trek is not easy and can cause several problems in later stage.

Booking a tour with tour operators can also take you to the sightseeing at Pahalgam, Chandanwadi, Sheshnag and Panchtarni.
