This valley begins at the base of Zojila Pass which is the Himalayan gateway to Ladakh.
As you step into the valley you will notice the carvings of a king and two women on pillars. The pillars bore some inscriptions in the old Brahmi script. This valley is inhabited by Dard stock which is an Aryan race. They speak Dardic language which is different from the other dialects spoken in Ladakh. Majority of the population of this valley consists of Muslims. Earlier before the 15th century Buddhism was the predominant religion here.
During summer season the valley looks gorgeous and in winters it looks paradisical with snow all around. Beautiful rivers and streams pass through this valley which adds more charm to it. The valley is a wonderful place for enjoying trekking. In fact it is popular as a trekking destination. It offers both long and small trekking routes to tourists. Among the entire Suru valley trek is the most popular one. It is a three-day long trek offering an exhilarating experience. It offers breathtaking views of flower valleys and meadows.
If you are a trekking enthusiast you can go for the three day trek to the holy cave of Amarnath. It is one of the most famous pilgrimage centres of India. These holy caves are dedicated to Lord Shiva who is believed to be the destroyer of evil. This shrine is around 5000 years old. According to the legend this cave is the holy place where Lord Shiva explained the mystery of life and eternity to his consort Goddess Parvati.
