Teej is one of the popular and widely celebrated festivals of Rajasthan. This festival is celebrated every year during the monsoon season between July to August. The festival is dedicated to Lord Shiva and his consort Parvati. The colourful and vibrant celebration of this festival calls on scores of tourists to this place from across the globe. Although this festival is celebrated across Rajasthan state but Jaipur is the centre stage because of its lively and fanfare celebrations. Teej festival is primarily meant for the married women and girls. During this festival married women and girls worship goddess Parvati in order to gain virtue, devotion and fertility. The festival is celebrated to commemorate the reunion of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati after years of penance. There are three types of Teej festivals which are celebrated with great pomp and enthusiasm.

The three types of Teej festivals are:

Hariyali Teej

This teej festival is celebrated in honour of abundant greenery and good harvest. During the celebration women wear green coloured clothes, bangles and adorn their hands with beautiful mehandi designs. Numbers of songs are recited to praise the Mother Nature. Various delicious food items are cooked with the new harvested cereals.

Kajli Teej

This is another popular teej festival among women. During this celebration women and young girls adorned themselves in colourful attire. On this day wings are laid down in the garden on which ladies swing and sing auspicious songs. Especially the Kajari folk songs are sung in which arrival of monsoon is praised.

Hartalika Teej

This is the popular form of teej celebration which is celebrated across north India. It is celebrated by married women and girls in whom they keep fast for long and conjugal life of their husband. During the celebration they do rigorous fasting without a single drop water and worship Goddess Parvati. On this day idol of goddess Parvati is festooned with beautiful and bright clothes and palanquin procession is taken out. The procession at Jaipur is the most popular one because of its vivid charm and glory. The procession at this place is marked by a number of well decorated camels and elephants.

The joy of this procession heightens with the presence of music bands playing several folk songs and women dancing on the tune of bands. Large number of tourists comes here to experience colourful and lively display of Rajasthan culture. Tourists from across the globe come here during the teej festival because it is the best time to feel the religious fervour of this princely state. Number of artists, folk singers, dancers and acrobats also come here which adds glamour to this most cherished festival of Rajasthan.
