These arches were used by Maharajas of the royal families to weigh themselves in gold, silver and other precious metals. Equal to their weight they gave the weighed metals to the brahmanis. This process of alms giving was followed by Maharana Raj Singh and his descendants. This event was known as Tuladan which was held annually. In ancient time during this celebration a large fair used to be organised in which intellectuals, priests, saints and folk artists would come and participate.

It is 1017 stanza inscriptions on twenty seven marble slabs which depicts the history of Mewar. It is acclaimed as one of the longest etchings in India.
