Vadakkumnatha Temple Thrissur

Vadakkunnathan temple in Thrissur is a wonderful temple to visit. It is one of the major attractions of Thrissur town. This beautiful temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva but also has shrines of Goddess Parvati, Lord Ganesha, Lord Krishna and Lord Rama. It is one of the biggest temples in the town. The temple serves as the venue for the famous festival of Thrissur, Thrissur Pooram.

The must-see procession is the procession of the Krishna temple at Thiruvanbadi. This festival was first celebrated by Sakthan Thampuran, the king of the erstwhile Kochi state.

Vadakkunnathan is an ancient temple reflecting a classy example of Kerala style of architecture. The temple sprawls over an area of 9 acre and is bordered by fortified walls which are pierced with entrance gates on all the four sides. The theatre hall near the entrance gate in the west is a must see attraction of the temple.

The temple is around 1,000 years old and is believed to be built by Lord Parashurama, one of the ten avatars of Lord Vishnu. The temple houses the statue of Lord Shiva which is covered with a mount of ghee. The mount is formed as a result of the daily ablution over the years. The mount is 16 foot high and is adorned with gold and three serpent hoods. It is said that it represents the sacred Mount Kailash.
