A Wildlife Destination Not To Be Missed!
If you are looking for a holiday full of wilderness, natural beauty and adventure, come to Eravikulam National Park. It is a wonderful wildlife destination famous for holding the largest viable population of the endangered Nilgiri Tahr. Sprawling over an area of 97 sq km, the Park is located along the crest of the Western Ghats in the High Ranges of Idukki district of Kerala. The other famous inhabitants of the park are dusky striped squirrel, small clawed otter and ruddy mongoose.
Eravikulam Nationa Park is a famed wildlife destination of South India where wildlife lovers come in great numbers from far and wide. At one point of time it was a hunting reserve of the British. It got the title of a wildlife sanctuary in the year 1978. The landscape of the park is very beautiful as it receives heavy rainfall. The lush green vegetation, picturesque landscape, fresh air and a variety of wildlife make this Park a a major attraction of Kerala. Due to the rich bio-diversity of this Park, it is under consideration by UNESCO World Heritage Committee for selection as a World Heritage Site. This park was especially set up to conserve the endangered Nilgiri Tahr.
Some of the other inhabitants of the Park are elephants, Golden Jackal, Jungle Cat, Sambar Deer, Wild dog, Nilgiri marten, small-clawed otter, Dhole, leopard? Nilgiri langur, tiger, leopard, Nilgiri wood pigeon, Kerala laughing thrush and the white bellied shortwing. This wonderful Park is home to around 132 bird species, 101 butterfly species, 26 mammal species, 20 orchid species and 19 amphibian species. In this Park you can treat your senses with views of colorful birds.
Another striking attraction found here is the Atlas Moth, the largest moth in the world. Also trek to the Anamudi peak inside the park which is the highest peak of South India. It offers breathtaking views of the park and its surroundings. It is a perfect place for enjoying trekking in Kerala.
