Introduction

Located at a distance of around 15 km from Nalanda, Rajgir is a destination of temples and monasteries. Abundant natural beauty and rich history have made it a popular destination for the travellers across the globe. Geographical location of Rajgir has made it rich in natural beauty. Located in a valley, Rajgir has stretches of lush green areas. Apart from the beauty and history, the place is recognized for the significant value in different religions.


History

In its olden days, this destination was the capital of the state of Magadh Mahajanpad. During that time, the name was Rajgrih, which means the 'Royal Home'. Connection of the region with Buddhism developed due to the fact that Lord Buddha spent a long time in Rajgir. The place also finds it mention in Mahabharata, the Hindu epic. In the epic, the destination is mentioned as Girivraja and the ruler was Jarasandha.


Attractions


Jivakameavan Gardens

This was the dispensary of the royal physician, who once treated Lord Buddha. It is said that duringĀ  Ajatshatru and Bimbisara rule, Lord Budhha was brought here to get the treatment of his wound. Jivaka was the name of the reputed doctor of that time.


Ajatshatru Fort

Built by Ajatshatru, the fort is an amazing piece of architecture. Established in 6th Century BC, the fort is a prime attraction in Rajgir. According to the belief, Lord Buddha stayed here during the construction period.


Cyclopean Wall

Once 40 Km long, Cyclopean Wall is made up of massive undressed stone. The wall encircles old Rajgir and is one of the prime pre-Maurayan structures. Traces of wall are still there and can be seen at the exit of Rajgir.


Ropeway at Rajgir Shanti Stupa

This rope way takes you to Vishwa Shanti Stupa. Located on 400 meter high hill, Vishwa Shanti Stupa is accessible by this Ropeway. The place is also known as Giridhakuta. Made up of marble the stupa is a popular attraction for tourists who visit the place for spirituality. The ride through this ropeway offers panoramic view of the region.


Other Attractions

Venu Vana, Karanda Tank, Sonbhandar (gold treasure) Caves, Veerayatan, Chariot Route Marks, Hot Springs and Pippala Cave are several other attractions in Rajgir.

How to Reach Rajgir

By Air: Patna airport is around 101 km away from Rajgir. Several operators provide service to and fromĀ  Calcutta, Lucknow, Bombay, Delhi and Ranchi.

By Rail: Rajgir has a railway station that connects the region with Gaya, which further links it with rest of the country.

By Road: Regular bus service is available from all the nearby locations like Patna, Nalanda, Gaya, Pawapuri and Bihar Sharif.
