Introduction

Located in the capital city Kohima, Nagaland State Museum lies half km north of the city. This valuable treasures of the museum displays the rich cultural heritage of the state. If you wish to learn about the tradition and history of the Nagas, this is the best place for you.


Attractions of the Museum

The famous State Museum exhibits a unique collection of articles of varied tribes that portray the rich traditions. Tourists can find picture of every tribe. The Naga architecture, their custom, social hierarchy, culture and costume, all are displayed in the museum. 

The main items displayed here include statues, gateposts, pillars and jewellery. A ceremonial drum looks like a dug-out war vessel in a separate shed is also displayed there. These vessels indicate that the Nagas might have come from Sumatra. The basement of the museum has birds and animals of the north-eastern hill states.


Rare Artifacts

The museum houses a rare collection of 16 tribes, which inhabit the state. Some of the artifacts displayed in this museum include clan motifs, necklaces, precious stones, traditional costumes and inscriptions.

This art gallery showcases the Naga Morung that are the hut models, showcasing the variance of architecture between the tribes. There are several musical instruments, made of bamboo and buffalo horns are also on exhibition in the museum.


Timings of Museum

The museum remains open from Tuesday to Sunday. Tourists can visit anytime between 10 am to 4 pm.

One can reach Nagaland State Museum very easily due to its accessible location. The capital city Kohima is well-linked to some of the major cities of India. The nearest airport as well as railhead is at Dimapur.
