Introduction

History
As per different legends, Itanagar was home to various characters of Mahabharata and Ramayana. According to these legends, Princess Rukmini, Lord Parashuram and King Bhismaka spent a long time in Itanagar. It is also believed that Itanagar also served for Tibeto-Burman tribes in its olden days. The historical records of the place speak about Ahom dynasty, Monpa and Sherdukpen tribes.
Tourist Attractions
Ita Fort
This fourteenth century fort holds a great place in the history of Itanagar. The name Itanagar is borrowed from this magnificent fort. Built in 14th or the 15th century, the fort does have an irregular shape. Made of around 80 lakh bricks, this glorious structure is one of its kind. The fort is the contribution of Ahom dynasty which left the evidences of its existence in form of this fort. For entrance, there are three gates that are on western, eastern and the southern sides of the fort.
Polo Park
Situated in Naharlagun, Polo park is another popular attraction of Itanagar. People with their interest in flora or who wish to spend a quality time with their loved ones visit this park. Located on top of a ridge, the park is an interesting place.
Buddhist Temple
Set amidst the manicured gardens, Buddhist temple is a spiritual place. This new yellow-roofed temple draws attention of every visitor. Highlights of the shrine are the stupa and a tree planted by Dalai Lama.
Excursions
Namdhapa National Park, Ganga Sekhi Lake, Tawang, Malinithan and Tezu are some excellent options to explore. These remain foremost in the list of must visit places of tourists, visiting the place.

How to Reach Itanagar
By Air: The Lilabari airport is the nearest and is located at a distance of around 67 km. This domestic airport is well-connected with the prime locations across the nation.
By Rail: North Lakhimpur is the railways station that serves for Itanagar. Located in the states of Assam, the station is at a distance of around 60 km.
By Road: Itanagar is well-linked with all the nearby cities through a wide network of roads. The nearest bus stand is Naharlagun bus station that connects it with Guwahati, Shillong, Ziro, North Lakhimpur and Bomdila. For further connectivity to Itanagar, tourists can use the state transport.
