This beach is originally known as Beerkul. In one of Warren Hasting's letters (1780 AD) to his wife it is mentioned as the ‘Brighton of the East’. In 1923, an English tourist John Frank Smith was charmed by the beauty of this place and started living here. His writings about Digha slowly gave exposure to this place to the global tourists.

Digha Attractions

New Digha renowned for science center and one of the largest marine aquariums in Asia is the prominent attractions of this place. The Science Center was established by the National Council of Science Museums. This science center is known for a fun glass measures individual height, a skeleton gives company for bicycle racing and many more. The entertaining scientific educational opportunities enthrall tourists during their visit to this place.


Another tourist attraction is the Amravati Lake which is known for the boating facilities. The snake farm that is situated in near to the Amravati Lake is another nearby attractions which famous for its amazing snake collections.


The temple of Chandaneswar dedicated to Lord Shiva is famous among tourists because of century old religious connection. It is located at a distance of eight kilometers from Digha.


At a distance of 14 kilometers from Digha is the Shankarpur beach. This is a wide and unspoiled beach famous for the casuarinas groves along the sea and a good climate round the year. Apart from the long, tree-lined beach, the main attraction is the Shankarpur Fishing Harbor Project.


Shopping in Digha

The major shopping area in Digha is behind the old Digha beach. Digha is famous for cal handicrafts and beautiful ornaments made of seashells. Ornaments made of seashell, Shell jewelry and Madur of Midnapore (handwoven mat made of weeds) in colorful designs are some of the popular things which can be shop at this place.


Best Time to Visit Digha

The winter month from November to March is a good time to visit this place. As summers from April to June is hot and humid.
