Rashtrapati Bhavan

The residence of the President of India, Rashtrapati Bhavan is located in New Delhi. Also known as the official Residence of the Head of the State, it was known as the ‘Viceroy’s House’ until 1950 and served as the residence of the Viceroy of India.

It is a mesmerizing structure with four floors and 340 rooms. Covering an area of 200,000 sq ft, it is made up of 700 million bricks and three million cubic feet of stone. One of the interesting features of this structure is that no steel has been used in its construction. It is the largest residence of any Head of the State in the world. It is ideally located on Raisina hill and reflects the perfect blend of the Mughal and Western styles of architecture.

Rashtrapati Bhavan was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and Sir Herbert Baker and today it is considered one of the most splendid buildings of India. The architectural design of this structure consists of jaalis, chhajjas, Buddhist railings and chhatris. The dome of this structure is one of its main attractions.

The Durbar Hall also known as the Throne Room is a major attraction of Rashtrapati Bhavan. It boasts of a mesmerizing chandelier (weighing 2 ton) hanging at a height of 33 meters. The layout of this structure is designed around a huge square. The Viceroy has a separate wing and there is a separate wing for guests. The Viceroy’s wing is a huge wing with four stories. Because it was too large, the first president of India decided not to stay there, instead stayed in the guest wing, and since then this tradition has been followed by the subsequent presidents.
