The cradle of Indian culture and civilization, Haryana is steeped in great mythological legends. It is a north Indian state which shares its border with Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi and Rajasthan. Chandigarh is the capital city of Haryana. Derived from two Sanskrit word, Hari (the Hindu God Vishnu) and ayana (home), Haryana means 'the abode of god'. The history of this state spans over 5000 years and speaks about numerous Vedic legends. This state holds sheer mythological significance as the holy book Srimad Bhagavad Gita was preached by Lord Krishna in Kurukshetra which is located in this state. The epic battle of Mahabharata at Kurukshetra and the three battles of Panipat were also fought here. The great Hindu epic Mahabharata was written by Ved Vyas on the banks of the Saraswati River in the legendry state of Haryana.

Kurukshetra

It is a must see destination of Haryana which is steeped in history and glory. It is the battle ground where the battle of Mahabharata was fought between the Pandavas and the Kauravas. It is also the place where Lord Krishna taught the lessons of Karma and Dharma to his disciple Arjuna. You can visit some of the important sites such as Sannihit Sarovar, Brahma Sarovar, Thaneswar Tirtha, etc.


Panipat

It occupies a significant place in the history of India as the three battles of Panipat were fought here.


Badhkal Lake

It is one of the famous picnic spots of Haryana. The lake here is surrounded by beautiful gardens. This spot offers lush greenery and peaceful ambiance.


Dumdama Lake

It is another picnic spot with picturesque surroundings. With the backdrop of Aravalli hills, the lake offers facilities for kayaking, canoeing and angling.


Panchkula

This place is famous for its temple dedicated to Goddess Shakti, the consort of Lord Shiva. The Maharaja of Patiala built the temple in 1861 to commemorate his victory.


Surajkund

It is among the most famous attractions of Haryana. The Surajkund Lake was built in the 10th century by the Rajput king Surajpal. The term Surajkund means 'Reservoir of the Sun'. It derived its name from a famous Sun temple which once stood here. Surajkund is also famous for its picturesque and green surroundings. It is a site where an art and craft mela( fair) is organized every year in the month of February. Here you can buy the traditional handicrafts and handlooms of Haryana and other states of India during the mela.


Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary

It is a paradise for nature lovers, especially bird enthusiasts. It is home to a variety of bird species (around 100 species) including the migratory ones. Established by the famous Ornithologist Dr. Salim Ali, the sanctuary attracts birdwatchers and biologists from far and wide.

How to Reach

By Air: The main airport in the capital city Chandigarh connects it to the cities of North India. Some of the parts of this state are located near the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi.

By Rail: The railway station at Chandigarh and the four railway stations in Delhi (which are easily accessible from Haryana) make this state easily reachable from the main cities of the country.
