The history of the festival dates back to 18th century when Portuguese introduced it. The term “Carnival” has been derived from the Latin word "Carnavale", meaning to throw away meat. It starts on the Sabado Gordo -i.e. Fat Saturday and concludes on Shrove Tuesday, i.e., Fat Tuesday.

This exciting event insists people to start preparations in advance. Young boys and girls enthusiastically indulge in designing their costumes for the occasion. Rehearsal for short plays composed of music, dance and songs for the carnival also starts. An officially assigned person, King Momo, flags off the event of Goa carnival India.

The entire state glares with lights, colourful ribbons and glittering papers. The streets are alive with the multicoloured procession with dances, bands and floats that pass through the state, leaving tourists fascinated. Grand balls are also organised in the evenings. The entertaining performance of the live bands is another draw of the festival.

The event brings along a colourful series of cultural shows. Various exciting competitions add entertainment to the event. The participants wear multicoloured costumes and mask to hide their identity for fun. Dancers are beautifully attired in colourful outfits that are similar to those of Brazilian Samba dancers.

A panel of selected people judges the participants, and King Momo gives away prize to the winners. People smear colours on each other and present the fire work to boost up the contestants. The roads are blocked and the police hold back the enthusiast crowd. The parade is the portrait of historic and cultural Goa as folk dancers depict scenes that are related to the history of Goa. The Carnival concludes with the popular Red and Black Dance organised by the Clube Panjim on the closing day.
