History of Goa Carnival
The history of the festival dates back to 18th century when Portuguese introduced it. The term “Carnival” has been derived from the Latin word "Carnavale", meaning to throw away meat. Significance of Carnival

The participants wear multicoloured costumes and mask to hide their identity for fun. Dancers are beautifully attired in colourful outfits that are similar to those of Brazilian Samba dancers.
A panel of selected people judges the participants, and King Momo gives away prize to the winners. People smear colours on each other and present the fire work to boost up the contestants. The roads are blocked and the police hold back the enthusiast crowd. The parade is the portrait of historic and cultural Goa as folk dancers depict scenes that are related to the history of Goa. The Carnival concludes with the popular Red and Black Dance organised by the Clube Panjim on the closing day.
