Mewar Festival

Welcoming the advent of spring season, Mewar Festival Udaipur is a famous event holding cultural and religious significance among the people of Rajasthan. The lively festival is celebrated in April with full gusto all over the state. Mewar, once being the governing place of the Mewar rulers, appears completely soaked in the festive fervour of this event.

During this festival, people remain in high spirits and participate in the festivities of this vivid affair. Bright lights decorate local markets and shops. Mewar festival coincides with Jaipur’s Gangaur festival and just like the Gangaur festival; it has a significant place among the womenfolk of Rajasthan. It is the time when women partake in the jubilant celebrations of the festival by donning attractive costumes and wearing jewelleries. Married women pray for marital bliss and the good health of their husbands. On the other hand, single girls pray for a perfect match for themselves.

Women of the city start the ceremony by dressing up the idols of Isar (Lord Shiva) and Gangaur (Goddess Parvati). Once the idols are dressed up, the women, carrying the idols on their head, take out a traditional procession moving through various parts of the city. During the procession, they dance, sing and encourage the participants of the procession. At the end, the procession heads towards Gangaur Ghat at Udaipur’s famous Pichola Lake. Women transport the images of the deities into special boats, which are then immersed in the lake. In this way, the religious part of the festival concludes. After this, starts the other amazing part of the festival.

Mewar festival is a good opportunity to witness the superb performances of local artists and other such cultural events. People from near and far come to Udaipur to join the joyous celebrations of the event. The Mewar festival is a visual treat which finally comes to an end with an impressive display of fireworks.
