Bodhgaya
This is the most famous attraction of Bihar where tourists come in great number. It is the most sparkling jewel of Bihar Tourism. A significant pilgrimage of Buddhists, Bodhgaya is the sacred place where Lord Buddha attained enlightenment and preached his first sermon. Located on the banks of river Niranjana, it attracts tourists from all over the world. There is a Mahabodhi tree here under which Lord Buddha attained enlightenment. There are several Buddhist monasteries here. Other popular attractions of Bodhgaya are the archaeological museum, the great Buddha statue, Dungeshwari cave temples, Chankramana and Ratnagarh.
Mahabodhi Temple in Bodhgaya
It is a beautiful Buddhist temple located in Bodhgaya where Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment under the Mahabodhi tree. The holy Bodhi tree is located within the temple complex. An architectural wonder, this temple is a World Heritage Site.
Nalanda
It is famous for its Buddhist University which was established in 5th century by the Gupta emperors.
Rajgir
It is a beautiful town with hills covered with forests. At one point of time it was the capital of the Magadh Empire. Lord Buddha lived here for several years and spread his teachings.
Patna
During ancient times Bihar was known as Pataliputra and Patna was its capital. This capital city also has its own share of attractions.
Vaishali
It is the birth place of Lord Mahavira and is also the place where Lord Buddha preached his last sermon. It finds mention in the great Hindu epic Ramayana. Ashok Pillar, Raja Vishala Ka Garh and the Archaeological Museum are the other attractions here.
