Introduction
Surat is a famous city of Gujarat which is ideally located on the banks of river Tapti near Arabian Sea. It is the second largest city of the state holding wonderful attractions in its sleeves. Famous for its beautiful saris, the city also offers monuments, rich culture, museums etc. It is known as the commercial capital of the state. It is aptly called the ‘diamond city’ of India as it is a major gem stone center where around 92% of the world’s diamonds are cut.
History
Surat served as a major port in the 17th and 18th centuries. It also finds mention in the great Hindu epic Mahabharata when Lord Krishna stopped here for a break while traveling from Mathura to Dwarka.

Old Fort
It is a beautiful fort built by Muhammad Tughlak in the 14th century. It is a well known attraction of the city.
Rangupavan
It is an open air theater with an accommodating capacity of 4000 people.
The Sardar Patel Museum
Established in the 19th century, this museum houses a wide variety of artifacts. It was initially named as Winchester Museum. Later it was renamed after India’s Independence.
Textile Market
Visit the textile market where you will get fine fabrics in silk and brocade.
Dumas
It is a blissful sea-side health resort where you can rest in the hands of peace and pleasure.
Dandi
It is a historic place associated with Mahatma Gandhi. Located on the coast of the Arabian Sea, this place is known for Salt Satyagraha movement which was spearheaded by Gandhiji. This place occupies an important place in the history of India’s Freedom Struggle.
Hajira and Tithal
Ideally located near the Arabian Sea, these are wonderful beach resorts of Surat. They offer picturesque surroundings, salubrious climate and swaying casuarinas
