History

Sanchi is worldwide famous for its many stupas, monasteries, temples and pillars dating from the 3rd century B.C. to the 12th century A.D in Madhya Pradesh. Sanchi was built by the Mauryan Emperor Ashoka, the governor of Ujjaini.

Ashoka Stupa

Ashoka Stupa is the most famous structure built by the Great Mauryan emperor Ashoka in 3 B.C. Among the many Stupas at Sanchi, the Ashoka Stupa is a major tourist attraction. The great Stupa is also known as the Ashoka's Stupa who built it in 3 B.C. The sculptures and the paintings in the Stupa teach the primary values of Buddhism. The ASI Museum

There is a museum of the Archaeological Survey of India in Sanchi. The museum shows rare and antique items. It has the lion capital of the Ashoka Pillar and some metal objects that were used by the monks.

Vidisha

Vidisha is situated at a distance of twelve km from Sanchi at the confluence of the Betwa and Beas Rivers. Vidisha in Madhya Pradesh is an ideal place for celebrating the weekends. By Road: Sanchi gets connected well with Indore, Sagar, Gwalior, Vidisha and Raisen by the MPSRTC. Several buses and taxis ease the way to commute Sanchi.
