Located at a distance of around 15 km from Shillong, Barapani Lake is a picnic spot. It is also known as Umiam Lake. Sprawled over a large area, the lake is a treat for nature lovers. Breathtaking views of the lake are the highlights of this heavenly place. Tourists visiting Meghalaya never miss their visit to this beautiful location. Snuggled in the hilly area, the lake is as interesting as its name. Different legends associated with the lake, make it more interesting and allure tourists visiting the region.

According to a belief, this lake is related to the heaven. Legend suggests that the lake is formed out of the tears of the deity. It is believed that two sisters in the heaven decided to visit Meghalaya. To shape up their plan, they left together to reach the destination. The plan was to reach Meghalaya and explore this abode of clouds. Unfortunately, only one sister could reach the destination. For the loss of her sister, she cried her heart out and thus, the lake formed.

Tourists visit the lake to spend some quality time in the lap of mother nature. Spread over a large area, this mysterious water body adds a different charm to the beauty of the region.
