Elephant Festival

One-of-a-kind festival celebrated in the cultural land of Rajasthan, Elephant Festival Jaipur underlines the charisma of Indian cultures in the most beautiful way. The festival sees a stunning elephant catwalk where countless elephants are decked up to enthrall audience. They move gracefully wearing colourful attires, play the royal game of polo and be a part of the vivacious festival of colours, Holi.

Flamboyant Celebrations

Jaipur Chaugan acts as the ground for this culturally rich festival. On the day of Holi festival, Chaugan greets thousands of locals and travellers who flock here to relish the sights of elephants, and traditional performances of dancers and musicians. The majestic elephants are painted with multihued colours and adorned with ornaments and embroidered velvets to catch the fancy of all.

Festivities start with sound of the bankiya (trumpet) that fills every onlooker with excitement. Thereafter, follows the procession of caparisoned elephants, lancers on horses and chariots portraying the majestic outlook of the state of Rajasthan.

Highlight of the event is the game of polo played by the giant animals. As the celebrations come to an end, participants play with colours and savour delicious Rajasthani food.

History

History narrates that Jataka stories of Buddhism have references of Hastimangala (the Elephant Festival). Elephants have also been considered a symbol of strength and wealth. They not only used to act as a special part during the wars but also during the royal festivities. Jaipur has always been a significant place for the British Raj and the Maharajas. Even today, elephant rides up to the Amber palace are available to give visitors the taste of royalty.

This is the reason why Rajasthan Tourism included this festival in their calendar and gives great significance to it. ?
